The packaging of fruits is an important part of fruit preservation. Different fruits have different packaging requirements, and packaging has at least three functions for fruits. Firstly, it has a protective effect to prevent compression, collision, and damage to fruits, which is the most important; Secondly, it is aesthetically pleasing and elegant; Thirdly, it is convenient for transportation. Good and scientific packaging can greatly increase the added value of fruits. In the circulation process of various fruits, some form of transportation is required because there is always a certain distance between the origin, market, and consumers. The ideal transportation system is to transport fruits in the fastest and most economical way possible without adversely affecting the quality of the fruit product.
1、 The earliest packaging containers were mostly made of plant materials, such as leaves, reeds, and grass stalks, which were woven and designed to be easy for people to carry. In the future, people will use livestock transportation, and the size of packaging materials will also increase, and the packaging materials used will become more diversified. At present, there are many packaging materials used for fruits in China, which can be mainly divided into the following five types: baskets: baskets made of natural plant materials such as bamboo and rattan are traditional packaging containers in China. The main advantage of this material is that it is cheap, lightweight, locally sourced, and can be woven into containers of almost any shape and size. The disadvantage is that the shape is irregular and often not very solid. Therefore, it is insufficient to prevent damage from occurring; Large size, easy to fatigue when manually installed; The shape is usually larger at the top and smaller at the bottom. Although it can reduce the pressure on the lower fruits, it is difficult to stack them on the ground during transportation and storage. Wooden crate: Wooden crates are better than containers made of other natural plant materials, with the advantage of being sturdy and able to be made into various standardized shapes. They have a stronger ability to prevent physical damage than other materials.
However, the wooden crate itself is relatively heavy,
The operation and transportation are quite difficult. Cardboard box: Corrugated cardboard box is a product of Western technology, which is lightweight and inexpensive, and therefore appears in large quantities in the field of fruit circulation as a substitute for wooden boxes. Another advantage of cardboard boxes is that they have a smoother appearance and are easier to use for printed labels and promotional materials. The biggest disadvantage of cardboard boxes is that they cannot be reused and are prone to damage once they are exposed to water erosion or rough processing. Plastic box: Plastic boxes can be made of various synthetic materials, but are mainly made of the following two materials: the harder high-density polyethylene type and the softer low-density polystyrene type. High density polyethylene boxes are sturdy, strong, and can easily withstand various pressures encountered in circulation under normal conditions, and can be stacked to a certain height; Meanwhile, as this type of box can be easily produced into a uniform specification, it can maximize the utilization of storage space; High strength, with great flexibility in design, and can also add handles and ventilation holes on the box wall without weakening the mechanical strength of the container. In addition, it is easy to clean, has a smooth appearance, and can be made into a variety of bright colors. If the design allows the boxes to be nested together, then an empty box will only occupy about one-third or less of the space of a full box. People believe that these plastic boxes have ideal technical characteristics in meeting the requirements of fresh fruit and vegetable circulation, so they are considered as alternatives to traditional packaging containers in any packaging development project. However, polyethylene material is expensive, and using this type of box is economically feasible only if it can effectively organize recycling and reuse it multiple times. Polystyrene, which is strong, low density, lightweight, and has good thermal insulation properties, can be used to transport pre cooled goods at daily temperatures. In addition, this material has excellent ability to gently impact. Its main disadvantage is that if too much sudden force is used, it will break or crush. Meanwhile, due to inconvenient cleaning and surface deformation during initial use, containers made of this material cannot be reused, resulting in high usage costs.
The above five types of packaging materials are mainly used to make packaging containers to resist damage from the outside world, and belong to the outer packaging of goods. Within the packaging container, there may be collisions between different products or between products and the container, which can also cause physical damage to the products. Adding inner packaging inside the packaging container can prevent damage caused by collisions.
The materials used for inner packaging mainly include plant materials, such as leaves, which are the cheapest inner packaging in rural areas. They are mainly used for padding and are very effective in protecting goods. In many parts of our country, leaves are used as inner packaging for basket products. However, plant materials are biological tissues that require respiration. Their respiration can affect the product, increase the heat accumulation in the packaging container, and expand the transmission of microorganisms. Sometimes, the packaging of such plant materials can also damage the visual appearance of the product
Paper: Paper is widely used as an inner packaging material, with the cheapest being old newspapers. The function of paper and plant leaves is basically the same, but paper padding can also be used for packaging goods. Compared to plant-based materials, paper may not necessarily be more effective in protecting products, but it does not have any negative interactions with the product and can significantly improve the visual appearance of the product in the market. There are many types of inner packaging paper, including wrapping paper, paper tray, corrugated insert board paper, etc. Packaging paper can be used to protect individual products or as a carrier for post harvest chemical treatment.
